What You Need To Know About Personal Lube

By: Phoenix Delray

When it comes to personal lube, you have several different options to choose from. Essentially, your choices boil down to personal lubes primarily made out of one of these three substances: oil, silicone and water. Each one has its own list of benefits and drawbacks, which will each be discussed below.

To start, you probably want to avoid any personal lubes with an oil base. This is because the oil has a tendency to break down latex, which leaves your condom more susceptible to breakage. Even if you are in a committed, monogamous relationship with your partner and you no longer use condoms to protect yourself from disease, you should still avoid personal lube with an oil base. This is because the oil tends to build up and leave a thin film on your genitals, which can cause small tears and can also leave you with an infection.

Water based personal lube, on the other hand, is totally safe for use with condoms and will not leave a potentially dangerous film on your hoo ha. It is also the most affordable and most commonly found out of all the different types of personal lubes available. However, after several minutes of going at it with water based personal lube, it tends to dry out and become really tacky. To remedy this sticky situation, all you need to do is sprinkle a little bit of water on to it. Instantly, the lube will be rejuvenated!

The last type of personal lube available has a silicone base. This is, by far, the most technologically advanced personal lube on the market. Unlike oil based lubricants, it is safe for use with latex condoms and gloves. And as an added bonus, it does not get dried out and sticky like those personal lubes with a water base tend to. This is because water will soak into the skin, helping it evaporate. The skin, on the other hand, does not easily absorb silicone. Although there are several benefits to using personal lube with a silicone base, it does cost a fair amount more than its water and oil based counterparts.

Once you have chosen your preferred base for the personal lube that you plan to use in the bedroom (or wherever, we do not judge!), you should figure out what kind of consistency that you want. There are sprays, gels, liquids and jellies available from which you can choose from.
