What You Need To Know About Havanese Litter Box Training

By: Fiona Kelly

One of the great things about Havanese is that they are small, which make them perfect for cramped, modern lifestyles. However, their small size also means they have a small bladder. They physically cannot "hold it" like a bigger dog or a human can. A small dog like the Havanese needs relief about every four hours. Sadly, you can't always get home for your lunch break in order to let your dog out. This is where the idea of Havanese litter box training sounds interesting.

And now the demands of modern work schedules mean that Havanese will be called on to adapt yet again; this time, to Havanese litter box training. In the last few years, there has been a push by dog owners to litter train small dogs. Big pet manufacturers have listened, such as Purina with their Second Nature product line of pans, litter, and really funny promotional videos. Never has it been easier to try Havanese litter box training.

Havanese litter box training is much easier to do when the Havanese is a puppy than when they are an adult. But if you have an adult who has been taught to go outside whenever nature calls, you must train your Havanese as if he or she were a little puppy. The principle is still the same for both puppies and adult dogs.

Although there will be instructions on the dog litter products, many dog owners feel that those instructions are worthless. In one sense, Havanese litter box training is an inexact science at best.

Some things you can do to encourage and reassure your Havanese that using a litter pan is okay is to place newspaper with the dog's urine on it in the pan. You can also teach your dog to eliminate on command. Although dog training books will usually not have information specifically about Havanese litter box training, they will on how to teach your dog to eliminate on command.

Each dog will learn Havanese litter box training in his or her own individual time. Some will catch on a lot faster than others, just like with other aspects of Havanese training. You can use dog training books specifically for small dogs to help you, but they need to be written in the last two or three years. The idea that ANY dog could be trained to use a litter box is a relatively new concept and is still a subject of debate among small dog owners.

Cues that your dog has to go are whining constantly, sitting at the door whining, walking around in small circles while sniffing and sometimes jumping up on your lap and staring at you. You then take your Havanese to the litter pan, drop them in and give the verbal command to eliminate.

Every dog learns at his or her own rate. Some take a lot longer to learn than others. If your dog seems to get the idea but still has accidents, a trip to the vet is on order to rule out any medical conditions.
