The Most Common Golden Retriever Problem Behaviors

By: Carol Matthews

There are many different breeds of dog that you can choose from and the Golden Retriever is definitely a fan favorite. There are certain things that you should be aware of before you decide to go ahead and get one of these dogs however, and in particular this refers to the Golden Retriever problem behaviors that are commonly an issue.

Golden Retrievers are attention-seeking dogs and although they typically do not lash out if they do not get enough attention it will make them more somber and ill tempered. These dogs just love their owners and develop a close relationship with them, and so when they are away from them it can be difficult for them to deal with. The key issue here then is learning how to solve the separation anxiety problem with your Golden Retriever and getting them to be able to deal when you are not at home.

Separation anxiety may be one of the most common Golden Retriever problem behaviors, but it is also one of the easiest to deal with. Helping a dog to overcome their problems with separation anxiety is really a lot like dealing with anxiety in people. It is a process, often a very lengthy process and one that can be quite trying as well. The idea of training away separation anxiety is really one that is impossible to achieve and should not be attempted, even with the best of intentions.

Instead of petting and kissing them goodbye before you leave, you want to intentionally decrease interaction with them prior to leaving. This will make your departure less noticeable and the dog may not even realize that you are gone until you return in some cases.

Instead you want to provide them with a distraction of some sort and use this to draw the dog's attention away from you as you are headed out. If you are going to be gone for an extended period of time and feel the need to connect with your dog before heading out then the best idea is to find ways to do so earlier in the day rather than at the last minute. They may even be sleeping when you leave and not even notice that you are gone until you return.

Separation is definitely the most common but only one of many Golden Retriever problem behaviors. Although it can be frustrating it is important to realize that there are things that can be done and solutions that can be used in order to help with this problem. One of the best things that any owner can do to help their dog with this sort of problem is take them to a dog training class or course.

Dog training is actually one of the best solutions when it comes to dealing with dog problem behaviors of any sort, and so you may want to find a professional dog trainer who will be able to help you out here. There are even some who will come directly into your home and show you how they train the dog so that you can use these skills on your dog once they have left.

There are even some dog trainers who will come directly into your home, which will be advantageous because then you will be able to learn the skills that they implement and use them on your dog once the trainer has left.
