The Getty Center

The Getty Center in Beverly Hills in California is a museum, which collects and exhibits classical sculpture and art, European paintings, drawings, manuscripts, decorative arts and photographs. The Getty Center was designed by architect Richard Meier and is the flagship of the J.Paul Getty Trust, the largest arts endowment in history. The museum is considered to be worth over $ 1.2 billion, and is free to the public. It is situated high atop the hill with a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean and entire Los Angeles region.

There are four primary art collections here: Greek and Roman antiquities, French decorative arts, European paintings before the 1900s and Photography from the beginning till today. The five galleries are called pavilions and the artwork is displayed chronologically. The north houses the oldest art while the west houses the newest. The first floor galleries have illuminated manuscripts, furniture and photography, while the second floors are connected by glass enclosed bridges and open terraces from where the hillsides and central plaza can be viewed. There are numerous fountains throughout the campus. Though the entry to the museum is free there is a parking fee for personal vehicles. It has a seven story deep underground parking place which can accommodate over 1200 vehicles. There is also a heliport, which can be used in emergencies and an automated three-car tram, which takes passengers to and from the museum.

The Getty Center, which was originally conceived in 1982, opened on December 16, 1997. The main objective was to advance the conservation of the visual arts in all their dimensions. It houses paintings like the ‘Irises’ by Vincent van Gogh. Currently it is involved in some controversies regarding the ownership rights of some of its paintings.
