The Ergonomic Mouse is Your Best Friend

By: Steve Lott

Office ergonomics are rapidly changing the way that consumers and producers view the office work space. The items that we are familiar with are becoming smaller, wireless, infra red and even motion sensitive. All of these advancements help to contribute to making a safer, healthier and more efficient workspace. After all, these are the very principles of the scientific discipline of ergonomics.

Ever since the explosion of the internet and web browsing, the mouse has jumped to the fore front of the computer peripheral arsenal. Only a decade or so ago, it was not uncommon to see computers (especially in the workspace) operated by key strokes and keyboards alone. However, with everything now just a point and a click away, the importance of the mouse to the personal or office computer is truly paramount. Due to this and other reasons, the ergonomic mouse is one of the hottest selling items in the peripheral market.

One of the most important innovations toward making the mouse more ergonomic is the development of the infra red movement sensor. This technological jump allows the mouse roller ball to become a thing of the past; and isn't it about time. Roller balls never quite fulfilled their function or purpose to anyones satisfaction. Unless they were meticulously cleaned (but you couldn't touch them!) they would stick and not respond to movements. The result was a number of headaches and some serious wrist damage from constantly jerking at the mouse. Thankfully, with infra red motion sensors, the mouse reads your every movement. In addition, the ergonomic mouse can be calibrated to even the pickiest of person's desired response sensitivity.

After the infra red motion sensor, the next greatest technological advancement for the mouse is the ability to go wireless. Now, wireless mice have existed for quite a while, however, they never worked as well as anyone would have liked. However, now thanks to USB ports and a better understanding of wireless technology in general, these mice work better than ever. No longer does the cord get caught behind the desk and tangle with all of the other cables and wires. Not only does this reduce stress, the less cords running through the computer saves energy.

There are numerous other innovations in the ergonomic mouse field such as vertical mice and joysticks. However, regardless of the type, proper positioning of the mouse is key to achieving all of the ergonomic goals. The pointer or clicking device should be quite close to the keyboard. This will ensure that the user need not stretch to click on an item. Even with the best mouse, however, most experts recommend using keyboard shortcuts when ever you can in preference to the mouse. This not only extends the life of the mouse, but aids with your comfort as well.

An ergonomic mouse can be the vital element to attaining a more comfortable and efficient workspace.
