The Derbyshire Dales and the Peak District – Motor Home Paradise

By: Kate Smith1

The Derbyshire Dales and the Peak District is one of the best regions to take your motor home or caravan in the UK. Just a few miles from the M1 and situated conveniently between Manchester and Sheffield it’s really easy to get to and takes no time at all to enter into a peaceful idyllic world, perfect for walking, camping or just chilling out. Even a few days here affords a welcome break of tranquillity and freedom.

There are so many facilities in Derbyshire for motorhomes. There is a fabulous campsite about 1 mile from the beautiful town of Bakewell called Green Hills. There you will find gorgeous views, sweeping hills to all sides of the park, fantastic toilet/shower facilities, a shop, a laundry and real privacy to get out the garden chairs and enjoy the outdoors with a cold beer- or two. Only a short walk into Bakewell there are the famous ‘pudding shops’ selling wonderful Bakewell tarts and numerous pubs and restaurants to visit.

If you take the trail in the other direction from the campsite there is a lovely walk to Monsal Head where the views are just breathtaking, especially on a clear day. It is a favourite with motor home owners who enjoy pulling up in the car park and picnicking on the edge of the ravine.

It’s a great way to spend a sunny weekend. The pub at the top does excellent bar food in ‘The Stables’ and the bars are well stocked with local ale.

If you are touring in your motorhome around Derbyshire a must see is the village of Eyam (pronounced Eem). This is the only place in Derbyshire that suffered with an outbreak of the plague. The residents were so concerned about the spread of the disease they isolated themselves from the other villages. Here you can find out the story of the plague and the victims that died in Eyam.

Visit the little museum there and be sure to check out the ‘Plague Cottages’ which are still standing and list the names of the victims (sometimes whole families) on plaques outside. If you are touring take a visit to Castleton and see where the Blue John is mined. Treak Cliff caverns are fantastic to visit. A guided tour around the caves is a must. Also take the steep walk to Peveril Castle for fantastic views. Derbyshire is very ‘campervan friendly’ and it’s great for couples, families and kids. Great sites, great views, great walks and if the sun is still shining at the end of the day great barbeques and get-togethers back at the campsite.
