The Days of Taboo Porn

By: Kelly Renaul

Before the 1970s, taboo porn ran rampant in the underground scene. Taboo porn was not widely or publically available because of censorship laws that were in place not only in the United States, but also in many other countries all over the world. What was available as a substitute for the taboo porn were magazines known as beefcake magazines.

Beefcake magazines originally were not meant as a substitute for taboo porn, but during the first seven decades of this century, they were pretty much all that were available to people. The magazines were full of pictures of attractive muscular young men in athletic poses. These non taboo non porn magazines were meant to promote health and fitness in young men. Due to the conservative laws banning sodomy and the homophobic social cultures that enforced censorship laws, taboo porn magazines and movies were available at a great risk to both the seller and the buyer. The beefcake magazines were legal, safe to have in your possession, and were much more easily found than the taboo porn magazines. They could be found in book stores, pharmacies, convenience stores, newspaper stands, and magazine racks.

In the 1970s, despite the fact that taboo porn was illegal and socially taboo as well, porn was a much more public group activity than it is today. People couldnt watch taboo porn in the privacy of their own homes, so they would have to venture to the movie theaters that were in existence to specifically play only the taboo porno flicks.

These theaters, most of which did show gay taboo porn, provided a sense of community and togetherness for the patrons that frequented the theaters. Not only that, but even though taboo porn was hard to find, people found that often during the taboo porn films they wound up having sexual escapades of their own, right there in the theater. Free sex with strangers was a main attraction of the taboo porn theaters.

Although taboo porn was available before the 1970s, up until the then it was considered still obscene. If someone was found in the possession of taboo porn in the 70s, they could become the target of serious social stigmas. 70s taboo porn was becoming more and more mainstream with every day that passed in the 1970s, and there was little that the government or anyone else could do about it.

One area of pornography that was especially unique was the aspect of taboo gay 70s porn. Even though pornography itself was pretty new, the even more taboo gay porn was even more socially new and unacceptable. In the eyes of many people in the 70s, if someone was found with gay taboo porn, or if they came out of the closet, they were dismissed by many people as having something mentally wrong with them. Thankfully, gay porn today is not taboo porn anymore, and although it was thought of much differently today than the gay 70s porn was, taboo porn today has even become pretty mainstream.
