The Dangers of the Recreational Use of Viagra

By: Antonio LeMaire

Since the FDA approved Viagra in 1998 millions of men have found it to be a safe
and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED). Sales have been topping
the billion dollar mark every year and Viagra is even proving to be helpful in
the treatment of other problems such as urinary tract problems caused by an
enlarged prostrate. It is also proving to be surprisingly effective in the
treatment of Raynaud’s Syndrome, which is a circulatory problem that limits the
flow of blood to the arms and legs.

There are possible side effects with Viagra but most of them, such as headaches
and nausea, are mild and of short duration. On the other hand, in rare cases,
Viagra can cause a man to have an erection that lasts for more then four hours
and this can be very dangerous. If that occurs, medical help should be obtained
immediately.

However, the vast majority of men can take Viagra even if they are suffering
from other health problems as long as they don’t prevent them from engaging in
sex. The medication allows them to have a normal and active sex life and
increases their self esteem and overall outlook on life. Unfortunately, there
are more cases being reported of Viagra being used as a recreational drug.

This can be highly dangerous because people are reportedly using Viagra in
conjunction with such illegal substances as ecstasy. No studies have been done
on how the two drugs may interact so the consequences of the use of Viagra with
illegal substances can prove to be devastating. It may cause serious injuries
and even death.
Many men are also using Viagra without medical supervision. There is a
particular problem with teenage boys who are stealing Viagra from their parents.
They have no idea how much dosage is safe and are unaware of the potential side
effects. Viagra was never designed to be a recreational drug.

Men who use Viagra without supervision or as a recreational drug are often
obtaining it illegally. A prescription is required to get the real Viagra and
there are no approved generic forms. However, there are many websites that claim
to offer generic Viagra. These pills are usually useless, but no one knows what
dangerous ingredients they may contain and how they may interact with other
medicines.

There are also some websites that claim to offer the real Viagra without the
necessity of a prescription. These websites are often based in other countries
and offer remarkably low prices. However, the Viagra they offer is usually
counterfeit. Much of it is manufactured in China and may contain very harmful
substances. There is also the problem of the pills being put together in
unsanitary conditions.

Many of these forgeries have the same blue color and diamond shape that the
original Viagra has and look so much like the real thing that even doctors and
pharmacists have trouble telling the difference. There is also the problem of
being unable to tell what dosage of the various ingredients they contain.

Even with the real Viagra, the dosage is very important. Viagra comes in 25-mg,
50-mg, and 100-mg. A man’s physician must be the one to determine what the
right dose should be. For example, men with kidney or liver problems are usually
started out at the lowest dose. Only a physician should decide if a dose should
be changed.

Of course recreational users of Viagra probably pay no attention to the
recommended dose, even if the have the real pill. This is a road map to disaster
and can be potentially devastating to a man’s health. The same is true for women
that may be tempted to try Viagra as a recreational drug.

A man who is being treated with beta-blockers or other medications for angina
can’t take Viagra at all because the combination of the two drugs can cause a
sudden and fatal drop in blood pressure. If Viagra is being used as a
recreational drug by someone with angina who is on other medications, they may
not know of this risk if they obtained the Viagra without a prescription. In
fact, there have been some deaths that may have been caused by this very
interaction.

Viagra is an effective medication that has helped many men with ED. However,
like all drugs its abuse is very dangerous and should be avoided.
