Refilled Ink Cartridges: A Good Choice?

By: Frank Bolsom

When it comes to choosing to use refilled ink cartridges in an inkjet printer, there are both positive and negative aspects to be considered. Manufacturers claim that your warranty will be voided and your printer damaged by using cartridges that have been refilled.

If you listen to the refill companies, on the other hand, the cartridges will work as well as the originals, at a much lower cost.

In reality, there is truth to what both sides claim. Consider the pros and cons of using refill ink.

Pros

Refill ink costs quite a bit less than a new ink cartridge, and after you need new ink several times, this can add up to a substantial savings.

Using refill ink will also allow you to recycle your ink cartridge and thereby help the environment, besides saving you money.

Readily available, you can store extra refill ink at home and you will be able to continue printing no matter when your cartridge runs out of ink. If you are using a Dell printer, for example, this is a huge benefit. This is because Dell ink is not available in stores; it has to be ordered directly from Dell.

Cons

The actual process of refilling your printer's ink can be a bit difficult and if something goes wrong you might have problems printing after refilling. Since printer manufacturers want you to buy their ink, they intentionally design cartridges that are not easy to refill.

Air bubbles can form in the ink which can translate to splotchy printing. The refill process can also be messy, with spilled ink being a common problem. Ink stains are next to impossible to remove so you want to be sure you're not wearing good clothes or working over carpet when refilling your cartridge.

And finally, using refilled ink can void your warranty in some cases. If you have a problem and it's determined to be caused by the aftermarket ink, your printer warranty won't apply. You have to weigh the cost of ink versus the cost of replacing your printer and make your own call on this point.
