Reborn Dolls: Dolls To Look Like A Person

By: Tommy Tompkins

Many doll enthusiasts have moved away from simple play things to more realistic figures which much more strongly resemble a human infant. These toys and the people that make them are commonly known as "reborn dolls". Professionals who have honed their craft to perfection are now able to reap considerably larger profits from handmade dolls. Any doll auction or showcase will contain a number of prime examples, and they are almost always the first items to go for high prices!

A very large increase in the market for dolls in approximately the last five years is due to the extensive use of artistic production methods which have improved the quality of the dolls and made them much more lifelike. Berenguer and preemie dolls, which have been popular for years, have reenergized the market, due to their realistic shapes and expressions, lifelike construction and close resemblance to human babies.

Often, reborn dolls are created using a specific process that works to strip the doll of its artificial appearance and trappings to create a more realistic looking and feeling model. The process usually starts with the disassembly of the doll and the removal of the paint that was applied at the production facility. This stripping of the paint off leaves a plastic shell that can then be altered as needed.

Reborn dolls will then have a purple hue added to their insides, which will create color tones underneath the plastic. This enhances the realism of the doll's skin color. At that point, different skin tones are painted on the outside to add a true skin color, and other touches, such as skin lines, blemishes and other effects will help to make the doll appear more realistic.

Reborn dolls will then have real human hair or soft human-like faux hair added for the hair and eyelashes, often by hand and strand by strand, to help create the human look. This can take dozens of hours. Once the hair is completed, the doll is put back together again. At this point softer fillings and other items, like sound boxes to create the illusion of breathing, or a heartbeat, may be added to make the completed doll seem even more life-like.

Reborn Dolls have become a popular gift, particularly for new mothers. The dolls can be made into a likeness of the newborn, emulating his or her special characteristics. People can make their own Reborn Dolls, and kits can be purchased to aid those who want to exert less effort on the project. Often folks are willing to pay upwards of a few hundred dollars for this advantage.
