Priapism: The Dangers of This Viagra Side Effect

By: Antonio LeMaire

Everyone has heard the ads for Viagra and their warnings about priapism.
Comedians have made jokes about the four-hour erection and how most men needing
Viagra would not think of that as a complication. However, the Viagra ads
include this information for a reason. Priapism is a very serious condition that
can cause very severe complications in men who leave it untreated, Viagra users
or not. This condition is not exclusive to Viagra and is actually very rare
among Viagra users; however, its severity makes it one of the most important
side effects to understand. The warnings about priapism should not scare off
potential users of Viagra, as the chances of this happening to them is very
slim. Just make sure that if you take Viagra, you fully understand this
condition and how to recognize it. You can then seek treatment for priapism in
the unlikely event that a problem should occur during your Viagra use.

What Is Priapism?

Priapism is a condition in which blood cannot or will not drain from the penis
after an erection is achieved with Viagra or for other reasons. These severe
erections are usually extremely painful and last longer than four hours. While
they are very, very rare after taking Viagra, priapism is a side effect that
every user of Viagra should be aware of and understand. If you have an erection
that becomes very painful or does not go away within a fairly short time, once
stimulation has ended and Viagra should have worn off, it is imperative that you
seek immediate medical attention. Untreated, priapism can cause severe damage to
the penis that not even Viagra can overcome.

What Kind Of Damage Can Result?

An untreated case of priapism that has resulted after taking Viagra can cause
serious permanent damage to the penis. There may be tissue damage that can cause
permanent impotence or erectile dysfunction that cannot be helped, even with
Viagra. Other complications of priapism include increased risk of blood clots
and stroke, due to the immobile blood trapped in the penis. In the most severe
cases of priapism that are left untreated, the genitals may have to be
amputated. These complications can be avoided if any suspicion of priapism after
taking Viagra is immediately treated at a doctor’s office or hospital. Remember,
with Viagra and priapism, time is of the essence. While priapism is one of the
most rare side effects of Viagra, it is also one of the most dangerous and
should not be taken lightly.

What To Do In Case Of Priapism

If you believe you are experiencing priapism after using Viagra, go immediately
to the nearest emergency room. You should never just wait and see if your
erection will go away on its own, should it become painful or last longer than a
few hours after Viagra should have worn off. The emergency physicians will
possibly need to drain the blood from the area manually and irrigate the penis
to remove any remaining blood. In very extreme cases, surgery may be needed to
remove the blood from the penis. Be sure that the emergency staff knows that you
have recently used Viagra and any other medications that you take, as this may
help them determine the course of treatment. Do not allow embarrassment about
this condition to keep you from seeking treatment.

Increased Risk Of Priapism

While priapism is a very rare occurrence with Viagra, there are a few risk
factors that can increase the likelihood of developing this side effect. Severe
trauma to the penis, with or without the use of Viagra can result in priapism.
Those with certain blood and clotting disorders, such as sickle cell anemia, are
advised against using Viagra, for their risk of priapism and other disease
related reasons. There have also been warnings about the increased risk of
priapism in those who mix the street drug Ecstasy with Viagra. There have been
increased instances of priapism in those who combine these two drugs. If you
have any of these problems or conditions, consult with your doctor before using
Viagra and be sure to report to the hospital should have even slightly suspect
that you are experiencing priapism.
