Kids Walk to School Initiatives

By: Alex Stacey

In today's world, it is getting harder and harder to keep up with rising prices. With so many things climbing, like gas prices and the amount of obese children, there has come a time for change.

Many schools have started to implement initiatives to have more and more school children walk, bike or ride or use micro scooters to get to school. The reasons behind these initiatives should be clear. Gas prices are making it harder to keep up with fueling school buses each week.

Also, with obesity on the rise, especially in young children, many are looking for methods to help children get even more exercise into their daily schedule. One way to reduce both of these problems is to have children walk to school.

The reasons to have children walk or scooter to school seem to be endless. One of the most important reasons is because children are able to have more physical activity in their day. Walking a short distance to school is a great way to stay healthy, especially for children.

Having more and more students walk to school helps them become less dependent on cars and school buses. The more exercise that children do, the less likely they are to suffer from things such as obesity and childhood diabetes.

Another reason why schools are handing out initiatives to have more kids walk to school is because it is able to reduce the amount of traffic that comes in and out of neighborhoods and school zones. With pollution seeming to be an issue in today's world, walking, biking, and scooting to school are green ways to get to where children need to go.

Besides these two reasons, walking to school allows children to become much more sociable and much more knowing of the outside world. When walking to school, children will probably meet another student or two along the way. Soon they will become best friends.

Walking to school helps kids to become sociable with others their age. As a child walks to school, he/she is able to learn the skill of being a pedestrian. The child will learn how certain signs work, such as the stop sign and when it is okay to cross the road, if necessary.

Outside of just the child, walking to school can help better a community, as well as the school itself. With more children biking or walking to get to class, schools will have to come up with safe routes for the children to walk. With this, people that live in communities come together and draft routes that will keep the kids out of any type of danger.

As a kid, you yourself probably walked to school if you lived nearby. Though many parents are concerned about crime while children are on their way to school, being able to come together as a community will help identify crime and keep children safe. Scootering to school allows children to become much more sociable. It also allows them to become more independent as well as healthy.
