How To Re-Upholster

By: Tom Silver

Sooner or later when you own older furniture you're going to need to have your chairs and sofas re-upholstered. Why? Because the covering has become worn. What this means over your furniture's lifetime your piece could be upholstered several times.
A local upholsterer can do your upholstery work. Or you can have a go yourself.
Revealed 7 Tips about Upholstery Instructions:
1. Your chair needs to be stripped down to its bare frame the stuffing, the springs and old fabric. This way you're left with the basic chair.
2. Remove all nails with pliers. Awkward nails can be gauged out of the wooden frame with a screwdriver and hammer.
3. Turn your chair upside down and attach the webbing. And speaking of that the webbing needs to be kept tight. You're then ready for the springs. These you should position in exact positions to ensure an even finish. Finally tie your springs together.
4. Your next step is the webbing and springs are covered with canvas. This canvas has to be tacked along the sides. You then need to attach a series of large stuffing loops. You're then ready to start stuffing with horse hair. Under these horse hair is stuffed.
5. You need to tease the horse hair out before stuffing with it. Why? Because this increase its volume. Stuff the horse hair a little at a time. This way you ensure an even stuffing.
6. Cover your horse hair stuffing with scrim. Then tack it down. Ensure all bumps are removed. Aim to have your scrim stuffed overlaps on all four sides of the chair.
7. You're now ready to sow your stuffing in. Sow around your chair - twice if necessary.
8. Apply more stuffed loops once you've finished stitching. Next apply some more horse hair and then cover with calico. And importantly check your seat is smooth.
9. Once your fabric is covering your chair have a 5cm overhang all the way around. Tighten the fabric and start tacking.
Congratulations! You've finished and can now sit on your chair.
