Help, I Can't Organize, I'm Discouraged

By: Marilyn Bohn

Every morning I walk by a reservoir where all summer I have watched two geese and their four babies. They come to this reservoir every year and it is delightful to see them grow from fuzzy, furry little birds into beautiful Canada geese that leave full grown at the end of summer. The babies are now almost as large as their parents. What a treat I was in for last Friday. I could hear the honking of the geese before I could see them. As I came even with the reservoir the four 'teenagers' were flapping their wings and then they flew up from one reservoir to the other reservoir about 40 feet away. Two of the geese were heading over my head but the sound of the other geese honking brought them back to the water where they landed safely.

Their parents were slowly climbing up the cement bank where they had been swimming before the flying lesson and walked (waddled) over to the pond where their 'children' had flown. It was sweet to hear how the one goose had been encouraging the others to turn back to the water. And then from the other reservoir the parents were going over to encourage them and maybe tell them good job. I am sure they will fly away soon and I will miss them, I hope they come back again next year as they did this year.

This made me think about organizing. I know this is a stretch from Canada geese learning to fly to organizing. I am just crazy about organizing and I am always drawing parallels. I was thinking when we get stuck with a project we are working on or we want to get something organized in our lives, in our home, or in our office but we just can't quite get the 'umph' to get it going then it may be a good time to hire a professional organizer, or ask a friend or family member to help.

Someone with the skill and objectivity of how to organize; who can teach and encourage may be just what is needed to get unstuck and working to the desired goal. Someone who can see the picture clearly and get you set on the right track to get the organizing done as you want.

All summer it has been fun watching the concern and the vigilance of the father goose watching over his little flock as they ate on the bank and as they swam. How comforting (and at times that is what we need even when organizing if we are overwhelmed) to have someone to encourage you through the process and to be taught by someone who knows how to organize, has good systems to teach that work for you and doesn't just tell you how to do it but shows you how to do it. Just like the geese had their ever vigilant parents teaching them all summer and encouraging them; if organizing 'isn't your bag', get someone to help you. Make it fun and see your success stack up.

Or how about your children? Do you tell them what to do and get cross with them because it isn't done like you want it to be done? Have you haven't taken the time to teach them and show them how to do it? And I'm not talking about teaching them just one time; it will take several times of teaching, showing, demonstrating and being with them to offer support and encouragement to them. But the time you take to teach, nourish and encourage will be worth it, the reward of them being able to keep their rooms organized, do the dishes the way you want them done and other assignments you give them will be wonderful for them and for you.

When we want a job well done; by teaching, encouraging and supporting our children or having the same for ourselves, it is the effort.
