It was officially opened to the public in October 1996. The museum constitutes of four galleries, including The Origin Of Our Horses, Shaping Sha Tin, Understanding Horses and Themed Exhibitions. A cinema and souvenir shop also contributes to the museum's appeal.

The Happy Valley Racecourse is seen at its best during the racing season, so when you visit the racecourse, remember to book your hotel in Hong Kong well in advance. Finding a good Hong Kong Island hotel in the middle of the racing season can be difficult. So, it's best to call and reserve your hotel in Hong Kong before you arrive.
