Happy Valley Racecourse

By: Naveen Marasinghe

Among the two revered racecourses in Hong Kong, Happy Valley Racecourse is the most popular and has an electric atmosphere surrounding it. The Happy Valley Racecourse is located on Hong Kong Island, accessible via the Wong Nai Chung and Morrison Hill roads.

Resembling a Roman amphitheater, the Happy Valley Racecourse has high stands and tight tracks perfect for viewing horse races. Gambling on horse races is the most notable pastime in Hong Kong and it's a very serious sport because of this. The impressive Happy Valley Racecourse is flooded with spectators on race days and the betting is always intensive. Parties hosted on the private racecourse balconies are a common sight and the elite social crowd enjoy the races from up there.

Nighttime is the best to enjoy races at the Happy Valley Racecourse. The big bright lighting and chaotic air coupled with the giant 20x5.8 meter video screen presenting an up close view of the races, the racecourse is a humongous center of activity on race nights. Just as moneymaking has become Hong Kong's favorite sport, horse racing at the Happy Valley Racecourse has become Hong Kong's favorite moneymaking sport. The racecourse has been active since 1846 and the modern city was built around this great attraction.

Besides the racing tracks, Happy Valley Racecourse is also home to another major horse racing attraction – the Hong Kong Jockey Club Archive & Museum. Also known as the Hong Kong Racing Museum, the building was constructed in 1995 as part of the grand stand and is located on the 2nd floor of the Happy Valley Stand. It was officially opened to the public in October 1996. The museum constitutes of four galleries, including The Origin Of Our Horses, Shaping Sha Tin, Understanding Horses and Themed Exhibitions. A cinema and souvenir shop also contributes to the museum's appeal.

The Happy Valley Racecourse is seen at its best during the racing season, so when you visit the racecourse, remember to book your hotel in Hong Kong well in advance. Finding a good Hong Kong Island hotel in the middle of the racing season can be difficult. So, it's best to call and reserve your hotel in Hong Kong before you arrive.
