Garage Door-Replace or Repair?

By: Peter Wilson..

Every home needs repairs at some time or another. Eventually, everything wears down and needs to be replaced or repaired. This includes your trusty garage door. Garage doors last so long that we tend to forget about them. Suddenly one day they stop working. Although a new garage door is going to be more expensive than what you paid years ago, they have many features that weren't present in garage doors at that time.

Garage doors today are insulated in ways that they didn't dream of years ago. This means more warmth as well as better soundproofing. They are also much more secure than years ago. This is great if you are one of those individuals that store all your possessions in the garage. You may think you don't know anything about garage door replacement, but it may not be as hard as you may think. Perhaps you know someone that is knowledgable about home repairs and can help you with the replacement. However, if you really are unsure, hire a professional to hang your new garage door.

At one time, wood was the only material you ever seen used for a garage door. Today, however, steel, fiberglass and steel are all choices being used. These materials not only look great but also are sturdy and allow you to customize the color you want. Many of these new garage doors have special safety standards so they won't close if something is in the way. Some of the newer garage doors also have windows. Many garage door companies have special security codes just for your garage door. These codes change each time you open the door. This way, a thief will never be able to guess the code.

All these new advancements in technology will make for a great garage door with many of the best features. However, they will also make the garage door heavier and more awkward, making it more difficult to handle and install for the inexperienced. You may find it more helpful to hire a professional to install your new garage door. In most instances, they will guarantee their work. All you'll have to do is oil the hinges, wheels and tracks from time to time.

If you're insistent on installing the garage door yourself, make sure you have a few extra pair of hands around. You'll need to install weather stripping first to keep out drafts. You will also nee a spring tensioning tool. You can buy this or possibly rent one. Make sure you understand the directions that came with the garage door. If you don't, do some research on DIY projects such as this either at your local library on online. Remember how long your first garage door lasted? If installed correctly, this one should last just as long.
