From the Fringe to Medical Mainstream: Chiropractics Today

By: Art Gib

It wasn't too long ago that chiropractors were looked upon by many as snake oil salesmen that practiced an art equivalent to that of faith healing. In other words, their treatments were considered by the majority of the medical community as not being a legitimate medical treatment.

Times have changed however. Today, most health insurance plans cover chiropractic treatment as it has come to be recognized as both a treatment option that has positive health benefits and being a legitimate treatment course.

Chiropractors have many different ways to treat a variety of conditions related to the spine and joints. For example, if you had a horrible car accident and now you have chronic neck or back pain, you could go to the chiropractor and they might take x-rays of your body to find out what is going on that is causing you pain, and then build a treatment plan that best fits you.

Another reason people go to the chiropractor is for chronic headaches or migraines. The chiropractor has many different ways to help with the constant headaches that plague you throughout your life. They also do massage therapy and treat other symptoms such as neck pain and joint pain.

Many of the aches and pains we endure can be traced to improper alignment of the spine which can result in pinched or restricted nerves which, in turn, can result in pain, numbness, or cause conditions that result in a slew of other symptoms.

Chiropractors are required to go through classes in order to obtain a chiropractors license, starting with 90 hours of undergraduate courses and at least 4,000 hours of instruction for full time chiropractic education.

They then are required to take a state bar exam after they graduate to become a licensed chiropractic practitioner. Throughout their career as a chiropractor they are required to take classes to keep up with the ever-changing medical field, and bone up on some things they may have forgotten.

You may be wondering what exactly a chiropractor does, which is pretty simple to explain. A major part of chiropractics is spinal manipulation, which is based on the idea that most pains in your body stem from your spinal cord. Adjusting your spinal cord can treat most pains by relieving pressure on certain nerves.

Although chiropractics can be very effective for anyone, it is considered an alternative medicine because it is much different than the traditional medical field. In a traditional medical field they would treat your body pains with drugs such as anti-inflammatory and narcotic prescriptions. If that doesn't help they would take x-rays and sometimes may even want to operate on your back to help alleviate your pains.

Chiropractics are a little more natural, because they want to treat your pain without surgeries. Chiropractic clinics range in prices for treatments, but usually your first exam is the most expensive because they will want to take an x-ray of your body to be sure there are no underlying issues of your pain, and then they will create a treatment plan that is right for you.
