Friendly Fire -- Why Does It Happen

By: Aydan Corkern

Do you realize that we kill a lot of people in every war that we had had because of what is called friendly fire? It is a very sad and painful truth about war, and it is sometimes something that can't be helped. This action is usually only used in times of terrible situations and if nothing else can be done.

If a military squad is held down by their enemies and there is no other way out for this squad of men, their leaders will notify their commanders that they will have to put this action into play. It will give the men time to maybe dig a foxhole or try to find some kind of shelter. When this happens there is no real safe place to be.

I think that this is the worst accident that could happen in a war. Wars are terrible not only because of all the lives that are lost, but because most of these wars could have probably been avoided in the first place. Most of the wars that we have usually start because someone thinks that they need more land or that this person shouldn't be let into an area. Sometimes I think that we might get into a war just because we are bored with things at home and this was a way to get out of the house and get some glory.

When the War Between the States, which was our worst, started most of the men that left had gone because this was a way to get some glory, and most of them were bored. After they joined in the war they found out that it was nothing like they thought it would be. Most of these men were voluntaries, so they thought that they could just leave when the war wasn't going their way. This happened on both sides with either one knowing what was going to happen.

In this war we lost whole families of sons in the north and the south. To me war is nothing but a big case of friendly fire because these men were told that they had to kill their friends and neighbors and even their own family members. If they didn't comply, they themselves would have been put in jails or just plain shot.

I hate war of any kind. I really feel sorry for the people that have one or more of the sons or daughters that have to go and fight in these wars. It is so hard on the families and loved ones of the ones that are lost. Sometimes it is harder to understand when it is because of friendly fire.
