Fired Up Voters Bring In A New Era For Politics

By: Aydan Corkern

For many of us this presidential election was a side of America we have never been able to see firsthand before. This has been the most fiercely fought election process in our time and what a show it was. It really gave us insight on what it is to be American and the real power the people do have when it is put to use in an orderly and determined fashion. It is an election that will go down in history for more than the obvious reasons.

Almost everyone will associate this presidential election with the fact that for the first time we have elected an African American to the highest office in the land. African Americans have fought long and hard in this country to have their citizenship recognized and respected among everyone and it is long overdue. For the black people in our country that were there for the civil rights movement that was led by the great Martin Luther King, it has been a proud moment that they longed for and some never believed they would have the opportunity to see in their lifetime.

Even besides the historical event of electing our first African American leader, this race was fueled by much more than that. Mr. Obama also represented change in a different way. He rallied young voters in a way that has never been done, and definitely not just from a black perspective. He has offered our country change in a way that represents that a new era has come and hope that we can alter to some degree the way this country is run.

The majority of people who voted for Mr. Obama did not do so because of the color of his skin, but because of the hope that he represents in helping this country to not only heal racial issues that have plagued our land, but because he has ideas that will change our futures for the better if he can move us in the direction he wants to take us. We truly believe that he will stand by his word and his promises to help us finally achieve a better way to provide energy for our country and tighten up on big businesses who want us to buy their products, but have them made overseas. We believe him when he says that he will strive for a better way to provide health care for those who need it.

As for myself, I am a white person who is a conservative Christian, but I am also a Democrat. I did not vote for Mr. Obama just because I thought it was high time a black candidate had an opportunity to run the country, but because I honestly thought that he is a young man with the driving fire and determination that it will take to set our country on a better path to the future.
