Finding a Profitable Niche

By: Goran Presto

Some people find it difficult to decide on a niche. They feel like they're committing themselves to a particular subject, and don't want to get it wrong. Well, it's all part of the process: you're going to get some of them wrong. You can't get everything right all the time, so some things will not go as planned - they might even fail. The important this is to act and do something. The only guarantee of failure is not trying!

The way I find a niche is very simple, works well and instead of making things difficult for yourself, just follow through my process. I first chose a few topics that I think might work. One source is a newsletter called NicheADay.com. This is a free resource that you can subscribe to and, sends out a new niche topic every day. The nice things about this is that the owner of this newsletter will do most of the research for you and will include useful information on the viability and competitiveness of each niche.

Some other great resources to get you started:

One pitfall that many people fall into is thinking of a niche as a sport, activity, or medical condition, or something similar. Iactually it is not. A niche is a group of people that have something in common, like football, poker, back pain, or something of that nature.

For your niche to be profitable, you have to be able to find that group of people, and they have to be able to find you. So if I'm going to target the back pain niche, then there should be forums talking about back pain and other places where I could come across some people suffering from this condition. There are some other factors to consider when determining what is a good niche. It's better if the people in your target group have money to spend (for obvious reasons). Even if you're not really selling a product, some niches are more lucrative than others. For example, medical terms, pay better in AdSense because they attract a higher cost per click. Last but not least, it's better if the niche you chose doesn't bore you to death! It is advisable that you have at least some interest in it to keep you motivated even if you are planning to create a niche website and sell it for profit.
