Ferrari - Could leave the Formula 1

By: Chuck Berkley

Based on the new competition rules for 2010, teams require a management organization plan, to limit the financial distribution that will include the new energy saving technologies (same engines for everyone); so a fact that will affect pilot’s will be some personal budgets being reduce at some extension, or perhaps teams such as Ferrari could leave the F1 forever.

The news about the team Ferrari feeling threatened to leave the Formula 1 World Championship for good, if the new standard engine rule for 2010 is admitted, was announced by the red team Administration Counsel (AC) during the past Monday. Ferrari’s AC has agreed that the sport needs an urgent budget reduction; nevertheless they consider that it makes no sense to accept a project which includes equivalency and standardization of the engines, due to the fact that this sport moves future technology and development to the car industries worldwide. That’s the reason why the Scuderia Ferrari, who has always promoted elite engine management, is considering leave the sport per-se for the first time since they joined it.

If FIA does not evaluate and clarify several elements under the statements for 2010, the CA has reserved the right to estimate the sponsor’s value based on investment, thus decide if it is worthy staying on a sport that cuts their income in half.

Now, what I don’t comprehend concerning this issue is, if engine advancement is stopped even for 1 year, it means that after that period of time all the teams will begin using new engines?

FIA president Max Mosley has great ideas, there is no doubt about that, but stopping engine development for a period of time may be too much to ask for. Yes, the team will continue their effort to manage new technologies on their own, but what’s the point if they cannot be tested in the F1 championship?

These changes on the F1 are coming and very fast, 2 weeks ago FIA announced a public auction to find the supplier s for the standard engines and transmissions, which will be in use ending 2009 and starting 2010. So basically we will be looking at least 10 of the best engine management companies competing for this profitable contract.

Maybe you are wondering how will the teams achieve identical power in the all engines? If you understand car technology let me put it this way: the outputs can be set to maximum strength and torque, so that basically covers the point of having the same engine on every single vehicle. Now, my question is, if they all have the exact same engines, what’s the point of having different aerodynamically design cars? I will look into that deeply and come with an answer on my next F1 article.

This sport depends 100% on oil, like every automobile activity on the planet, so the idea of biofuels in the Formula 1 sounds less threatening than having equal engines for all the teams. As a matter of fact, by putting on hold the progress on engines, the FIA wants to push the teams into rising superior power recovery systems, but again the mission should be to limit the CO2 each auto can produce.
