Fathers Day Banned in Schools in Scotland

By: Martha Franklin

Because most schools in Scotland feel they will offend children of single mothers and lesbians, they have banned all Fathers day cards. The policy was finally uncovered after many of the dads failed to receive their regular cards and handmade gifts on Father's Day. Many larger schools in cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh are using this practice out of concern for single parent/same sex households, despite many who don't agree.

Those concerned with family rights deplore this policy, claiming that it does not pay proper respect to fathers. In April it was reported that 25% of children in Britain live with a single parent. Over the last 20 years, this rate has doubled. Schools and teachers claim that they are just trying to be culturally aware.

In a continuation of a pattern of adopting "politically correct" measures and removing Christian references from holidays and greeting cards, primary schools have recently banned Father's Day cards, although Mother's Day cards are still permitted.

The breakdown of the family and divorce are cited as the reasons for the change. When interacting with children, whose fathers are not living with them, or for those without fathers, teachers are required to be "sensitive". The changing dynamic of the family is an area of increasing concern in the educational system.
