Factors That You Need To Consider Prior To Having Cosmetic Surgery

By: Jonathan Castrie

Cosmetic surgery continues to increase in popularity. A good portion of Americans have already submitted to an aesthetic surgical procedure. Having cosmetic surgery has inspired new self-confidence from their improved appearance. Millions more Americans are considering the many cosmetic surgery procedures available. Before electing to have cosmetic surgery, do your research.

It is easy to find a cosmetic surgeon – just let your fingers do the walking through the phone book. Consulting with one is also fairly easy: pick up the phone, make an appointment, and show up on time. But, before a surgery is scheduled, you must meet certain criteria. At the same time you are consulting with surgeons to find the one you like best, they will be judging you as a candidate for a successful surgery.

Is cosmetic surgery the right answer for you? Do you meet the requirements for surgery? If you were to meet with a cosmetic surgeon and discuss a possible procedure, the surgeon will not agree to perform the surgery without considering many factors. Let us consider a few of those factors.

When did you decide you wanted cosmetic surgery? The best candidate for surgery considers it for a good length of time. Too often people decide to have cosmetic surgery on a rash impulse. An impulsive desire for cosmetic surgery is not deemed mentally healthy in regards to being a strong surgical candidate. If the judgment of the consulting surgeon is that you have not given cosmetic surgery enough thought, he or she may recommend that you wait a few more months before you make a decision.

Are your surgery expectations grounded in reality? Cosmetic surgery is not a cure for an unhappy life. If a patient believes cosmetic surgery will eliminate all of his or her problems, the surgeon will say no to performing surgery. In addition, your basic body structure won’t change with cosmetic surgery. Surgery will not transform you into an entirely new person; it only alters or enhances your current aesthetic appearance.

What are you really expecting from cosmetic surgery? Is it to please someone else, or is it for you? Your surgeon will not approve of your desire for cosmetic surgery if you want it just to please your spouse. Patients should only have cosmetic surgery to please themselves, not anyone else.

Do you need to lose a significant amount of weight? Excess weight can be the underlying cause of why a body doesn’t heal well after surgery. Your surgeon may require you to drop a few pounds before he or she agrees to perform surgery.

Excessive sun exposure and smoking are both habits that will thwart your chances to get cosmetic surgery. A smoker’s healing process may be hindered because smoking restricts the flow of blood. Skin stretched during surgery may not snap back to its original condition if it lost elasticity due to excess sun exposure. A sun god or goddess or an excessive smoker is not an ideal candidate for cosmetic surgery.

Do you feel you are emotionally stable? Two vital elements the body needs to heal after surgery is mental stability and low stress. If your life is in shambles, your surgeon will most likely recommend that you wait until your life is less stressful.

These are just a few of the factors that will be considered in a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon. Not everyone is the ideal candidate for cosmetic surgery. It is up to the surgeon to determine whether or not you are fit for cosmetic surgery.
