Does The Paparazzi Go Too Far?

By: Shawn Wilson

I just watched a youtube video that showed the paparazzi following Britney Spears and was shocked. Let me be honest, I am not a fan of the music or any pop music for that matter. That being said I would never wish what I saw on anyone. There were over 70 photographers following her into a drug store to buy what I believe was toothpaste.

The question is what drives these people to follow her? It's the people that buy the tabloid magazines, read celebrity blogs and watch entertainment shows each night. What I struggle with is why would anyone find it interesting to watch someone buy toothpaste except maybe Keith Richards?

There is a tabloid magazine that my wife buys every darn week and yes it bothers me that she does. After 2.5 years of marriage you have to spend time on the things that really are worth fighting over and this little vice that she has in not worth fighting. Back to the magazine, what amazes me is each week they have a four page spread of pictures called celebrities just like you. In this segment they basically show celebrities buying coffee, walking their dog and shopping. Why am I surprised that Brad Pitt likes Starbucks and who the heck cares?

These are normal people, well in most cases they are and why would they not do these boring activities that we all do? We're all born if we're lucky with 10 fingers and toes, we struggle with relationships, providing our families with food and heat and more. Why does a celebrity do it any different? Past having more money than most of us they're just human beings.

It has been said that 1/3 of all Americans have been on television and that most young Americans are more interested in being a celebrity than focusing on their education. First off we all can't be celebrities and with the 200 plus channels on television and most of them being reality based shows why am I not surprised at this huge percentage.

Television does have some channels that promote education and god forbid for us to use our brains from time to time. With the immense popularity of reality shows most of TV is mind numbing slop of nattering and whining.

I think it's time that we all reevaluate what is important to us. I realize you need down time, some activities that shut the brain off for a bit and give us the opportunity to recharge. Hey I like Will Ferrell movies for this particular reason. Creating an industry where 70 photographers follow a 20 year old into a drug store to buy toothpaste doesn't seem right.

Let's leave these people alone and focus on the more important things in life!
