Do Not Forget To Start Packing While In Escrow

The real estate market is brutal. Despite the banking industry crashing and burning, you have managed to sell your home. The neighbors are envious, but now comes the hard part. Yep, you have to pack up your stuff and move.
Moving is hardly an idea of a good time for anyone. It is stressful and can wipe you out emotionally and physically. This is particularly true when going through inspections and the like during escrow which are already stressful enough.
There is no method for escaping the double whammy, but you can cut the stress down by having a plan. A plan, if followed, takes an element of chaos out of the equation. It can be the difference between an efficient move and madness.
Everyone helps with the move. This is not something the parents or a parent is stuck doing. The only exception is if you have really young kids. If you do, they can be left to their own devices or with friends.
The mighty cardboard box is a vital weapon in your moving adventure. Treat it well. How? Tape up the bottom for extra support. Heavy stuff then is packed in the bottom with light stuff on top.
If there is something worse than moving a heavy box, it is moving it twice. To avoid this, make a diagram of the new home. Each room gets a number. Mark all packing boxes with a relevant number. That way, everything ends up in the right place on the first try.
Chaos often ensues with moving because there is no order to the packing. This is a big mistake because it makes you feel like you are making no progress. To avoid this, pack each room up completely before moving on to a new area.
Before you rush out to buy a ton of packing material, gather up all your towels. Why? Towels are just about the best packing material for delicate things. They provide soft, padded cushing for plates and other delicate things you own.
Towels are not the only packing material you have in your home. Socks are great for smaller items. Many people put stemware in them. The little bit of cushion provided could be the difference between breaking and remaining whole.
Now for the really hard part. All hail the number 9. Why? It shall be your guiding light when evaluating clutter. If you have not used something in 9 months, it needs to be thrown out in the garbage. It takes discipline, but is a smart move.
No rule is absolute. Pictures of your youth and such can stay. Magazines from seven years ago, however, need to be put to rest. This may be painful, but at least you do not have to haul them on the move to the new home.
I am not going to lie to you. This advice will not make your move a happy family event. It will, however, cut down on the chaos involved. Less chaos means less stress and that is not a bad result when moving.
