Diploma Mills are the Scourge of Online Education

Diploma Mills, the Scourge of Online Education

Diploma mills are to online education what a screen door must be to a submarine. They simply do not work and are guaranteed to bring an unhappy time to anyone who is using it.

A degree from a diploma mill is at best impotent and can in fact cause the holder to be charged with legal issues that can result in seriously severe punishments. Any profession that requires a degree from an accredited school is one that could result in legal charges being leveled against the holder if they are caught using as their creditation a degree from a diploma mill.

Adults are expected to know the difference between a degree from a recognized school of higher learning and one that was purchased from a place that would award such credentials based soley on the fact that a price was paid and not on the merit of having learned what is necessary to have earned such honors. It would be a great mistake to not give this fact much consideration because diploma mills that are online colleges will not always be completely clear to potential students just exactly what their school is all about.

Since they have shown a lack of ethics in awarding diplomas then it is not a large leap of faith to figure that they will have no better morals towards their students as they are showing the rest of the world by sending these unqualified people out into the unsuspecting public armed only with a piece of paper that says they know what they are doing. The question remains however as to how do you recognize a college that is a diploma mill? Don't expect any help from the unaccredited college. That much is certain. Places that cheat whether it be to you or for you, really don't care who they have to hurt in order to get money.

There is no way to know for sure if a college is a diploma mill or one that is truly accredited short of checking the name of the organization which awarded accreditation to the school against the federal guidelines that list the institutions that are recognized by authorities as being official accrediting entities. Some college search sites provide the accreditation information such as USAonlinecolleges.com but if you don't know whether to trust the site then since this is about your education and not like buying a taco, then it would be wise to do the homework yourself and make sure that college has been awarded accreditation by a recognized organization before you make any kind of payment or enter into any agreement that is binding.

It was mentioned that diploma mills can be dangerous to unsuspecting people because they might find themselves involved in a legal matter stemming from their credentials not meeting minimum requirements but it should also be noted that these scourge are also dangerous to the rest of the people as well because who else would be to blame if a person who thought they were trained for a job that had inherent possibility of catastrophe, was to do the job incompetently resulting in the wrongful death of others ... or themselves?

Certainly you don't punish the student who paid for an education and sincerely thought they had earned that degree they were awarded. Certainly not the people who were harmed. No, as the saying goes, you don't punish the monkey for picking up a gun and shooting someone. You punish the person who left the gun out where the monkey could get ahold of it. That sounds good on paper but it likely will not hold up in a court of law.

It is irresponsible for these diploma mills to award degrees to unqualified graduates but that fact will not help those who blindly walk into these situations when it comes time to face legal charges for the damage they've caused by their lack of knowledge. Situations like that can be completely avoided however by simply doing your homework before you start classes. Find out for yourself what organization has awarded accreditation and whether they are a recognized institution and you'll never have to worry whether your degree will be good enough to satisfy authorities.
