Create a Killer Portfolio to Land Website Design Jobs

By: Clayarc

Your portfolio may be the single biggest determining factor in whether or not you land the web design job you are hoping for. Will potential employers be blown away by your portfolio, or is it just average?

Why does your portfolio matter?

Potential employers want to know that they are hiring someone who can produce quality work. The best way to determine that is by looking at your portfolio. If they like what they see, your odds of being hired are greatly increased.

A portfolio is your way of showing of your talents and skills to potential employers. First impressions are important, so a portfolio that is well put together definitely stands out. A good portfolio lets employers know exactly why they should hire you.

What should be included in your job portfolio?

Your portfolio should be a showcase of your best design work. If you aren’t sure which designs are your best, ask a friend or someone with good taste to look through your work with you and help you choose. You can always create design samples if you can’t find any of your work that stands out from the rest. Remember that the portfolio should be of your best work; don’t include everything you’ve done.

Your online portfolio should include screen shots of your designs, live URLs of any sites you have done, and brief descriptions of the designs and projects. Include in the description what part you played in the website design as well as the type and amount of work that went into the project.

How to make your portfolio stand out

One way to make your portfolio stand out is to create multiple portfolios – different portfolios for the different types of jobs you may apply for. This way, your portfolio is a lot more specialized and will thus be more attractive to a potential employer.

Also make sure that the design of your online portfolio is simple and doesn’t detract from the designs you are showcasing. Be bold in showcasing your work – don’t be afraid to brag about your accomplishments. Let employers know just how amazing a designer you are.

A good portfolio speaks for itself and lets employers know what skills and abilities you have. Don’t skimp on your portfolio. Take the time to polish your portfolio and make it something that will cause potential employers to take a second look.
