Create Custom Closets Perfect For A Favorite Hobby Or Craft

By: Christine OKelly

Crafts and hobbies are a great way to relax, but doesn't seem like it when you are having to spend a large portion of your time looking for what you need. A traditional closet can help keep everything in one spot. Unfortunately, they are difficult to work with because you simply can't see what you have left. Designing custom closets to match your particular projects can solve these problems. With special compartments for each item, everything is stored in an organized manner. Cleanup is quick and easy and you will find what you need faster and easier because you can see it instantly.

Separated Shelving Units

Large flat items such as paper, laminate, wood, and bristol board pose a bit of a challenge when it comes to storage. They need to be visible. At the same time, they need to be stored so that they don't end up bent or broken. Vertically divided compartments will save space while keeping these items in pristine condition. In order to keep the dust out, add sliding doors. You can add solid doors if you would like to hide the mess after you're finished.

For smaller sheets such as construction paper and stickers, add in horizontal shelving. If you would like to store large amounts or make sure they don't fall out, use shallow wire sliding baskets and install them at a thirty-degree angle. This same concept works well for yarn and other similar items.

Install Drawers

Pens, paints, paintbrushes and smaller items get lost in large containers and having them in several cups just isn't a feasible option when it comes to custom closets. Include a series of small drawers with moveable dividers for these items. These drawers also work great for items such as wooden shapes, die cuts, spools of thread and other items. You can pull the drawer out completely and put it back when you are done. The dividers will keep everything separated.

You might want to add specialty drawers to custom closets. Pull out work spaces give you added room to work with for supplies. If you add them to the end of the work surface, they act as an extension to make longer projects easy to work with.

Stackable Containers

Stackable containers are a favorite storage device for hobbyists, but they can be a real pain if you have to walk around them consistently. When designing custom closets, be sure to add shelves on the upper levels that fit the size of your containers to save space. Add decorative doors to hide them away when you aren't using them. Sometimes supplies are just too nice to hide them away. In this case, have glass sliding doors installed to keep the dust out while still letting you enjoy them.

Some supplies and tools need special systems to store them conveniently. Rolls of ribbon and paper can be threaded onto a dowel. If you store them close to your work surface, have a measuring stick installed down the length of your work surface. This will make it easy to measure and cut the materials. You can also use the end of the surface to tear off supplies such as paper.

Have holes cut into the corners of the work area and sink cups into them for pencils, scissors, paperclips, and other small items that you use all the time. Wreaths and similar items can be hung onto pegboard if you use it as the back of the unit. It doesn't matter if you only have a small corner in a New York apartment or a large room in your house reserved for a closet in Chicago, there is only one basic rule when it comes to designing custom closets -- that it matches your favorite activities perfectly.
