Coaching Those Who Want to Learn

By: Bart Icles

The methods of coaching vary depending on the industry and the personalities with which we work, but there are some common elements that will apply to any executive who needs to build momentum. To examine this, let's follow a CEO through his offices to plot his plan to coach his management staff and employees. We will call our CEO James.

James has been running a financial consulting business for the past nine years and has had great success in his company. The clients are satisfied with the consultants that James hires, and they return continually for more business. What more can James ask for? Well, James feels that there is something in the company conduct that needs to change.

He notices several employees that come to work and pass the day trying to find anything to occupy their downtime. They check email constantly. They have a clock right in front of their faces. By the time they enter the office in the morning, they are already thinking of when they get to go home.

James understands that his employees are family-oriented. He has had great talks with many of them about their family situations, and he does not intend to downplay their desire to be with their families; however, his concern is a legitimate one. If these employees only spend 8 hours in the workplace and at the end of the day they feel that all they have accomplished is surviving until the clock hits five, they are not going to be building a solid self esteem.

He concluded that he needed to find some way to isolate the issue. He started asking employees why they came to work every day. He listened sincerely as his managers claimed their purpose and goal in their life's work. He saw sincerity in some, and noticed a bit of a dramatic show in others.

He decided that in order to give his bottom tier employees the opportunity to elevate their vision, he needed to help his managers to enjoy the workplace and pursue their business goals within the company. He gave his managers learning opportunities that they requested. He allowed them to explore in their downtime some of the other aspects of their interests.

After noticing quite a bit of success, he transmitted this same opportunity to other employees. His managers took employees aside to ask them what they would like to learn or become proficient in during their downtime. It became very clear who of all the employees had a vision of progression and who was simply trying to get to the end of the day.

As time went on, James made sure that those who received promotions realized the reasons for which they were being promoted. It was because they exercised principles of progression and he asked them to feel responsible for helping other employees to obtain the same drive.

His business felt the effects of his understanding of these important principles, and employee attitudes within the office soared. All they needed was an insightful coach.
