Christmas Shopping with Kids

Remember when you could do your Christmas shopping quickly and easily, by yourself? Those were the days before you had a family and young children. These days, with your little ones, you have to prepare for hours just to make it to the mall and back, in one piece.

You can't go quickly, that's for sure. Every change of venue means bathroom trips and car-seats and diaper changes. And you can only shop during peak hours-no more midnight mall runs, even when the mall's open until midnight-because, once the sun goes down, tiny bodies start to shut down for the day.

When braving the Christmas crowds with your little ones, you shop according to their schedule, not yours. But there are a few things you can do to make your shopping experience a little easier.

Discuss the purpose of your shopping trip with your children, before you start. This will help them understand that you're hunting for specific gifts, and it will help you keep on track, as you shop.

Ask your children if there's anything they need to shop for on this trip. Maybe it's the perfect time to buy that gift for Grandpa. Involving your children as active participants will help to keep them interested the whole trip.

Plan a shopping trip which includes a visit with Santa Claus. Most shopping areas have Santas, from whom your kids can solicit their favorite toys.

Make sure, before you leave, that your kids have been fed. A hungry or thirsty child will often act out, without understanding his source of discomfort. It's always a good idea to have some snacks tucked away, just in case hunger strikes.

Check with other parents and find out which shopping centers have the best childrens' play areas. Many will have certified adult supervision, so that you can leave your kids to play, while you shop.

Set up a reward system with your kids, in advance, for good behavior. Knowing that there's a prize for being nice, and not naughty, and that Santa knows the difference, just may be the difference between a dream of a journey and a nightmare.

As a parent of small children, you know that no trip with them is easy. But Christmas shopping with your kids doesn't have to be torture, as long as you plan ahead.
