China: The Merit Of Saving Face

The concept of saving face in fears of some public humility is something most people understand. But if you were a Chinese antiques shop keeper and you had an angry customer who was wrongly accusing you of selling an interior product. Until you prove her wrong, she is causing you loss of face, especially if there were many others nearby. But once you prove your case that the product you sold is good honest value. At that point you have face, and your accuser has not.

It has been stated that it is not the Chinese way to show open emotion, particularly admission of guilt, as is more popular in America. To the Chinese mind these displays of personal weakness is a terrible showing of loss of face. A revealing story about events that have recently happened point out how sensitive, or not, some actions are. And amusing example of savings face or the power or foolish plays that can happen the first visit to the United States.

The Chinese President Hu asked that his visit be a state visit. President Bush downplayed the visit to an official visit. To save face the Chinese media all interpreted official visit to state visit, saving face. President Hu learned and objected that he was going to only get a 19 gun salute rather than the full 21 guns, and this was changed at the last moment. But pettiness won out: President Hu asked for, and was denied a State Dinner. Instead there was a State Lunch.

In response, the great television coverage in China were the visit to the home of Bill Gates of Microsoft, and discussions with other computer celebrities. Did you notice that after President Hu had been grabbed by the arm by President Bush, that President Bush was allow to wander in The Great Hall, trying to find the door. The scene went on and on, and when you rrelate one story to the next, you can understand why hundreds of millions of people would have laughed until their eyes were wet.

If you have the values or ideology or human ideals and need for respect of a Chinese antiques shop keeper or not, you know that the way to gain your soul is to stay true to your core values. It may not seem that the above actions by the American President were doing goodwill to his guest. Since China is now the largest debt holder of American securities, to cause such loss of face to your major debt holder is amazing in its inadequacy to the need. Do not smirk or make lose face at the man you owe all your money to.
